French army officials announced Thursday that forces from their Operation Burkhane had killed close to 40 militants in Niger near the Burkina Faso border.
The strike was carried out alongside Niger forces using air surveillance in response to an attack on Niger gendarmes at the local government’s request, French military officials stated.
French forces had been welcomed after being withdrawn earlier this year from Mali – where armed men murdered over 100 civilians close to the Niger border last weekend.
